In The Beginning There Was Oregano
Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start… I hope you’ve seen the sound of music. It’s a classic and Julie Andrews is an international TREASURE! Was I yelling? I get excited about these things…
The beginning! My journey with natural health and wellness began about seven years ago. Oil of Oregano was the first essential oil that crossed my path. Apparently this is an “advanced” oil… who knew!? I didn’t. Back then I knew nothing. I grew up in the Midwest, where meat and potatoes reigned and if you were sick you just took a pill… after something was already wrong.
For years, I struggled with chronic bronchitis. Every year, at least twice it would flare up and I was prescribed antibiotics, specifically a Z-pak. Again, Midwest band-aid health mentality. I reached a point in my adult life where I had become concerned about taking antibiotics so frequently. I was a little older. A little wiser. AND my metabolism wasn’t letting me eat pizza whenever I wanted anymore. Sad…
This powerful essential oil is often referred to as “nature’s antibiotic” and let me tell you, it was faster and more effective than the numerous Z-paks I had taken over the years. Three days and I was already on an upswing that took the Z-pak two weeks to achieve. I was fully better in a week on the Oil of Oregano instead of the usual month it took on a Z-pak. AMAZING! Right?!? Does that not blow your mind!?! Mine was. MIND BLOWN!
This led me to explore whole foods, organic products, and most importantly natural medicine. During this time, the familiar pangs of my bronchitis symptoms popped up, so I consulted my chiropractor. He was passionately against our pill popping culture and band-aid mentality. He believed in preventative care, so I expressed my concerns to him about antibiotics and how often I had been taking them for a decade at that point. He told me about Oil of Oregano.
THE AMAZINGNESS DOESN’T STOP THERE! Oil of Oregano is the go to for all infections: bacterial, fungal, and viral. Yes it works on those pesky colds and flus too. I have also used it topically for cuts and scrapes, and even athlete’s foot!
A go to brand for me is Now Foods. They are clearly labeled steam distilled and are pure oils. It is extremely important to avoid oils that are diluted or contaminated with synthetic materials. If you’re particular about using only organic products, I would suggest Garden of Life MyKind Organics. All ingredients are organic and properly distilled as well. If you’re someone who doesn’t want to deal with taste, because this oil can be extremely spicy when taken directly, try the Gaia Oil of Oregano capsules. These are great to take when you’re feeling sick. I don’t know about you but I’m extra sensitive to taste when I’m under the weather.
Note: Some schools of thought say certain essential oils may not be safe to use during pregnancy. However, experts say to use the minimum dosage as directed and it should be safe. Please consult your physician if you have any concerns and use at your own discretion.
